Comorbidity

Presence of two or more distinct mental health disorders or medical conditions in the same individual.

Full Definition

In psychiatric documentation, comorbidity refers to the simultaneous occurrence of multiple disorders, such as depression with anxiety disorder, or substance use disorder with bipolar disorder. High comorbidity rates complicate diagnosis, treatment planning, and prognosis. Documentation must clearly delineate each condition and their interactions. This differs from medical comorbidity (physical health conditions) and should not be confused with complicated or treatment-resistant conditions.

Usage

Usage note: Lowercase in general usage; distinguish between psychiatric and medical comorbidity.
