gasless laparoscopy

A laparoscopic technique that creates working space through mechanical abdominal wall lift systems rather than gas insufflation.

Full Definition

An alternative approach to conventional laparoscopy that eliminates the need for pneumoperitoneum by using mechanical devices to lift the anterior abdominal wall and create operative space. This technique employs special retractor systems or lifting devices to elevate the abdominal wall, maintaining visualization while avoiding the physiological effects of CO₂ insufflation. Gasless laparoscopy is particularly useful in patients with cardiopulmonary compromise or when CO₂ absorption poses risks.

Usage

Usage note: Specify the lifting system used and rationale for choosing gasless technique.

In Context

  • "Gasless laparoscopy was chosen due to the patient's severe COPD." — Operative planning note
  • "The surgeon converted to gasless technique when pneumoperitoneum caused hemodynamic instability." — Operative report
