minilaparoscopy

Laparoscopic technique using instruments and trocars smaller than 5mm in diameter.

Full Definition

Minilaparoscopy, also known as needlescopic surgery, is a refinement of standard laparoscopic technique that utilizes instruments and trocars with diameters of 3mm or smaller, compared to the conventional 5mm size. This approach aims to reduce postoperative pain, improve cosmetic outcomes, and minimize port-site complications while maintaining the benefits of minimally invasive surgery. The smaller instruments may require longer operative times and can be more technically challenging due to reduced instrument strength and visualization. Minilaparoscopy is particularly suited for diagnostic procedures, simple therapeutic interventions, and procedures where multiple small incisions are preferable to fewer larger ones. The technique may be combined with standard-sized ports when more robust instruments are needed.

Usage

Usage note: Some sources hyphenate as 'mini-laparoscopy'; both forms are acceptable.
