trocar
Pronunciation: TROH-kar
A sharp-pointed surgical instrument with a cannula used to create initial access ports during laparoscopic procedures.
Full Definition
A trocar is a sharp, pointed surgical instrument consisting of a sharp obturator inside a cannula (hollow tube) used to puncture the abdominal wall and create access ports for laparoscopic surgery. Once inserted, the sharp obturator is removed, leaving the cannula in place to serve as a conduit for inserting laparoscopic instruments and the camera. Trocars come in various sizes (typically 5mm, 10mm, 12mm) and may be disposable or reusable. Proper trocar placement is critical for safe laparoscopic access.
