NIPPV

Also written as: NIPPV — Nasal Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation

Nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation; non-invasive respiratory support delivering cyclical positive pressure breaths.

Full Definition

Nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) is a form of non-invasive respiratory support that delivers cyclical positive pressure breaths through nasal prongs or mask. Unlike CPAP, which provides continuous pressure, NIPPV adds intermittent higher pressure breaths to assist ventilation while maintaining baseline PEEP. This mode is often used as a step-down from mechanical ventilation or to provide additional support beyond CPAP for infants with apnea, increased work of breathing, or mild respiratory distress.

Usage

Usage note: Specify backup rate and pressure settings; distinguish from continuous CPAP.

In Context

  • "The infant was transitioned from CPAP to NIPPV due to persistent apnea episodes." — Respiratory therapy note
  • "NIPPV settings were adjusted to provide backup breaths at 30 per minute with PEEP of 6 cmH2O." — Ventilator management note
