SGA

Also written as: SGA — Small for Gestational Age

Small for gestational age; birth weight below the 10th percentile for gestational age.

Full Definition

Small for gestational age (SGA) describes infants whose birth weight falls below the 10th percentile for their gestational age based on standardized growth charts. This condition may result from intrauterine growth restriction, maternal factors, placental insufficiency, or genetic causes. SGA infants are at increased risk for hypoglycemia, hypothermia, polycythemia, and long-term neurodevelopmental issues. The designation is distinct from low birth weight, which is based solely on absolute weight.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify percentile when possible; distinguish from absolute weight classifications.
