Intermediate care unit for newborns who require more than routine care but less than intensive care.
Full Definition
A transitional care nursery, also known as an intermediate care nursery, provides a level of care between the normal newborn nursery and the NICU. This unit cares for infants who may have mild respiratory distress, need IV antibiotics, require feeding assistance, or are transitioning from intensive care. Transitional care nurseries are staffed with nurses trained in neonatal care but may not have the same level of technological support as a full NICU.
