Full Definition
An umbilical venous catheter (UVC) is a central venous access device inserted through the umbilical vein, typically positioned with the tip at the junction of the inferior vena cava and right atrium. UVCs are commonly used in critically ill neonates for administration of vasoactive medications, parenteral nutrition, blood products, and frequent blood sampling. Placement requires radiographic confirmation, and the catheter can remain in place for several days to weeks depending on clinical needs and complications.
