Standardized assessment tool to estimate gestational age in newborns using physical and neurologic criteria.
Full Definition
A widely used clinical assessment tool that estimates gestational age by evaluating specific physical characteristics and neuromuscular maturity indicators in newborn infants. The New Ballard Score includes assessments of skin texture, lanugo, plantar creases, breast development, ear formation, and genitalia, combined with neurologic testing of posture, arm recoil, and other reflexes. Each component is scored and totaled to provide an estimated gestational age, particularly valuable when maternal dates are uncertain.
