IUGR
Also written as: IUGR — intrauterine growth restriction
Intrauterine growth restriction, a condition where fetal growth is significantly impaired during pregnancy.
Full Definition
IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction) refers to a condition in which fetal growth is significantly impaired during pregnancy, resulting in a fetus that is smaller than expected for gestational age. This condition is diagnosed prenatally through ultrasound measurements and estimated fetal weight calculations. IUGR can be classified as symmetric (affecting all body parts proportionally) or asymmetric (primarily affecting abdominal growth while head growth is preserved). The condition may result from maternal factors (hypertension, malnutrition), placental insufficiency, or fetal abnormalities. Infants with IUGR face increased risks of perinatal complications and may require intensive monitoring and specialized care after birth.
Usage
Usage note: Some organizations prefer 'FGR' (fetal growth restriction) over IUGR.
