oligohydramnios

Pronunciation: oh-li-go-high-DRAM-nee-ohs

Condition of decreased amniotic fluid volume during pregnancy.

Full Definition

Oligohydramnios is a condition characterized by abnormally low levels of amniotic fluid (less than 5th percentile for gestational age or amniotic fluid index <5 cm). This condition can result from various factors including fetal renal abnormalities, intrauterine growth restriction, post-term pregnancy, or premature rupture of membranes. Oligohydramnios poses significant risks to fetal development, including pulmonary hypoplasia, limb deformities, and growth restriction due to compression. The condition requires careful monitoring as it may necessitate early delivery depending on severity and underlying cause. Neonates born after oligohydramnios may experience respiratory complications and require intensive monitoring in the immediate postnatal period.

Usage

Usage note: Opposite of polyhydramnios (excess amniotic fluid); anhydramnios refers to complete absence of fluid.
