Full Definition

An elevation of indirect (unconjugated) bilirubin in the bloodstream, which is the most common cause of visible jaundice in newborns. Unconjugated bilirubin is lipophilic and can cross the blood-brain barrier, potentially causing kernicterus at very high levels. This form of hyperbilirubinemia typically results from increased bilirubin production, decreased hepatic uptake, or impaired conjugation. It responds to phototherapy and differs from conjugated hyperbilirubinemia, which suggests more serious hepatic or biliary pathology.
