The coordinated use of both eyes to create a single, unified visual perception with depth sensation and enhanced visual performance.

Full Definition

Binocular vision is the complex neurological process by which the brain combines the slightly different images from both eyes into a single, three-dimensional perception of the visual world. This process requires precise alignment of the visual axes (fusion), suppression of diplopia, and integration of disparate retinal images to create stereopsis (depth perception). Binocular vision provides advantages including improved visual acuity, expanded visual field, and enhanced depth discrimination. Disruption of binocular vision can result from strabismus, amblyopia, or neurological conditions affecting the visual pathways or extraocular muscles.
