confrontation visual field

Full Definition

A preliminary method for assessing visual field defects at the bedside without specialized equipment. The examiner faces the patient at arm's length and tests each eye separately by having the patient detect finger movements or count fingers in the four quadrants while fixating on the examiner's nose. While less sensitive than formal perimetry, it can detect significant field defects and guide further testing. Essential screening tool in acute neurological settings.
