Full Definition

Cortical visual impairment (CVI) refers to decreased visual function resulting from injury or malformation of the visual cortex and associated visual processing areas. Unlike ocular causes of vision loss, the eyes and anterior visual pathways are structurally normal. CVI may result from hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, stroke, trauma, or developmental abnormalities. The condition can present with various symptoms including decreased visual acuity, visual field defects, difficulty with visual attention, or problems with visual-spatial processing. Diagnosis requires demonstrating normal pupillary responses and ophthalmoscopic examination in the presence of visual dysfunction. Treatment focuses on visual rehabilitation and environmental modifications to maximize functional vision.
