The ganglion cell layer (GCL) is the innermost nuclear layer of the retina, containing the cell bodies of retinal ganglion cells whose axons comprise the optic nerve. This layer is particularly thick in the macula where ganglion cells are densely packed, and thinning of this layer can be detected using optical coherence tomography. Damage to ganglion cells, whether from glaucoma, optic neuritis, or other optic neuropathies, results in irreversible vision loss since these cells do not regenerate. Assessment of GCL thickness has become an important tool in monitoring optic nerve diseases.
