Quadrantanopia is a type of visual field defect characterized by loss of vision in one quadrant of the visual field. This condition typically results from partial lesions of the optic radiations or visual cortex. Superior quadrantanopia involves loss of the upper quarter of the visual field, while inferior quadrantanopia affects the lower quarter. The defect may be congruous (identical in both eyes) or incongruous (different between the two eyes), providing localizing information about the lesion site.
