The neural pathway connecting retinal ganglion cells to the lateral geniculate nucleus, crucial for conscious vision.

Full Definition

The retinogeniculate pathway represents the primary route for visual information transmission from the retina to the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the thalamus. This pathway consists of axons from retinal ganglion cells that travel through the optic nerve, undergo partial decussation at the optic chiasm, and continue as the optic tract to reach the LGN. Different classes of ganglion cells contribute to distinct parallel pathways (magnocellular, parvocellular, and koniocellular) that process different aspects of visual information. Understanding this anatomy is fundamental to localizing lesions and interpreting visual field defects in neuro-ophthalmological practice.
