The visual cortex encompasses multiple cortical areas involved in processing visual information, beginning with the primary visual cortex (V1) in the occipital lobe and extending to numerous specialized visual areas (V2, V3, V4, V5/MT, etc.). Each area processes different aspects of vision including form, color, motion, and depth perception. Lesions in different visual cortical areas produce characteristic patterns of visual field defects and visual processing impairments. Understanding visual cortex organization is essential for interpreting complex visual symptoms and localizing posterior pathway lesions in neuro-ophthalmological practice.
