cortical dysplasia

Developmental malformation of cerebral cortex characterized by abnormal neuronal organization and architecture.

Full Definition

Cortical dysplasia, also known as focal cortical dysplasia (FCD), is a developmental malformation of the cerebral cortex characterized by abnormal neuronal migration, differentiation, and cortical organization. These lesions are classified into several types based on histological features, including architectural disruption, cytological abnormalities, and the presence of balloon cells. Cortical dysplasia is a leading cause of pharmacoresistant epilepsy and requires careful histopathological evaluation to guide surgical treatment decisions.

Usage

Usage note: Specify dysplasia type (I, II, III) when classified; often abbreviated as FCD.
