luxol fast blue

Also written as: LFB — Luxol Fast Blue

Histochemical stain that selectively demonstrates myelin in nervous tissue. Stains myelin blue-green and is often combined with PAS or cresyl violet.

Full Definition

Luxol fast blue (LFB) is a specialized histochemical stain used specifically to demonstrate myelin in central and peripheral nervous system tissue. The stain selectively binds to the phospholipids and lipoproteins in myelin sheaths, producing a distinctive blue-green coloration. It is commonly combined with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain or cresyl violet counterstain to simultaneously visualize myelin and other tissue components. LFB staining is invaluable for assessing demyelinating diseases, evaluating the extent of white matter damage, and studying developmental myelination patterns. Areas of demyelination appear as pale or unstained regions against the blue-green background of normal myelin.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as LFB. Specify whether combined with PAS or other counterstains.

In Context

  • "Luxol fast blue staining revealed extensive demyelination in the periventricular white matter." — Multiple sclerosis case report
  • "The LFB-PAS stain highlighted both the loss of myelin and the presence of foamy macrophages." — Demyelinating disease evaluation
