perivascular pseudorosette

Characteristic histologic pattern where tumor cell processes radiate toward blood vessels, typical of ependymal tumors.

Full Definition

Perivascular pseudorosette is a distinctive microscopic pattern observed in ependymal tumors, characterized by tumor cell processes that extend radially toward central blood vessels, creating a spoke-wheel appearance. Unlike true rosettes, these structures lack a central lumen and instead have a blood vessel at their center. This architectural feature is considered pathognomonic for ependymomas and is one of the key diagnostic criteria used in neuropathological diagnosis.

Usage

Usage note: Always hyphenate; distinguish from true ependymal rosettes which have central lumina.

In Context

  • "The tumor demonstrated numerous perivascular pseudorosettes, supporting the diagnosis of ependymoma." — Histopathology report
  • "Perivascular pseudorosettes were easily identified at medium magnification throughout the specimen." — Microscopic examination
