satellitosis

Clustering of glial cells around neurons, typically indicating neuronal injury or stress in neuropathological examination.

Full Definition

A histopathological feature characterized by the accumulation of glial cells, particularly microglia and astrocytes, in close proximity to neuronal cell bodies. This phenomenon represents a reactive response to neuronal damage, metabolic stress, or inflammation. Satellitosis is commonly observed in various neuropathological conditions including viral encephalitis, hypoxic-ischemic injury, and neurodegenerative diseases. The degree of satellitosis can serve as an indicator of disease severity and progression. In editorial contexts, it's important to distinguish satellitosis from normal glial-neuronal relationships and to ensure proper usage in describing reactive changes versus primary pathological processes.

Usage

Usage note: Use as a singular noun; avoid redundant phrasing like 'satellitosis changes'.

In Context

  • "Marked satellitosis was observed in cortical layer III neurons throughout the affected hemisphere." — Pathology report
  • "The severity of satellitosis correlated with the duration of hypoxic exposure in experimental models." — Research findings
