subependymal spread

Pattern of tumor dissemination along the subependymal surface of ventricular walls, particularly in high-grade gliomas.

Full Definition

A characteristic pattern of tumor invasion where neoplastic cells migrate and proliferate along the subependymal layer that lines the cerebral ventricles. This pattern is commonly observed in glioblastomas and other high-grade gliomas, representing a route of tumor dissemination that can lead to distant seeding within the ventricular system. The tumor cells typically maintain contact with the ventricular surface while extending along the subependymal zone, which contains neural stem cells and provides a permissive environment for tumor growth.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from leptomeningeal spread which occurs along pial surfaces rather than ventricular walls.
