Full Definition

Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) is the catalytic subunit of the telomerase enzyme complex responsible for maintaining telomere length. In neuropathology, mutations in the TERT promoter region have emerged as crucial molecular markers for central nervous system tumor classification and prognosis. TERT promoter mutations are commonly found in IDH-wildtype glioblastomas and IDH-mutant 1p/19q-codeleted oligodendrogliomas, where they serve as important diagnostic and prognostic indicators. The presence or absence of these mutations, combined with other molecular markers, helps pathologists accurately classify tumors according to current WHO guidelines and provide relevant prognostic information to clinicians.
