aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage

Bleeding into the subarachnoid space caused by rupture of an intracranial aneurysm, requiring emergency imaging and intervention.

Full Definition

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) occurs when a weakened area in an arterial wall (aneurysm) ruptures, causing blood to leak into the subarachnoid space surrounding the brain. This condition represents a neurological emergency with high morbidity and mortality. CT angiography is typically the first-line imaging modality to identify the source of bleeding and plan treatment. The distribution pattern of hemorrhage on imaging can help localize the ruptured aneurysm and guide neurosurgical or endovascular intervention.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from non-aneurysmal causes of subarachnoid hemorrhage in clinical documentation.
