ASPECTS

Also written as: ASPECTS — Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score

Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score, a systematic method for quantifying early ischemic changes on non-contrast CT in acute stroke.

Full Definition

The Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) is a standardized 10-point scoring system used to assess the extent of early ischemic changes in the middle cerebral artery territory on non-contrast CT. The scale divides the MCA territory into 10 regions, with 1 point subtracted for each region showing early ischemic changes such as loss of gray-white differentiation or tissue hypodensity. ASPECTS scores ≥7 are generally associated with better functional outcomes and lower risk of symptomatic hemorrhage following reperfusion therapy. This scoring system helps standardize stroke imaging interpretation and guides treatment decisions in acute stroke care.

Usage

Usage note: Always provide numerical score (e.g., ASPECTS 7/10) for clinical utility.

In Context

  • "The admission CT showed an ASPECTS of 8, supporting the decision to proceed with mechanical thrombectomy." — Stroke intervention documentation
  • "Early ischemic changes were quantified using ASPECTS methodology, revealing involvement of 3 regions." — Radiology quality assurance review
