Abnormal connection between dural arteries and venous sinuses or cortical veins, potentially causing venous hypertension.

Full Definition

Dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) is an abnormal vascular connection between dural arteries and dural venous sinuses or cortical veins. These acquired lesions are classified according to their venous drainage pattern, with cortical venous drainage (Cognard types III-V) carrying higher risk of hemorrhage and neurological complications. On imaging, findings may include enlarged feeding arteries, early venous filling on angiography, and venous congestion. MRI may show flow voids, venous pouches, and secondary changes such as venous infarction or hemorrhage. High-grade fistulas require prompt treatment due to risk of intracranial hemorrhage and progressive neurological deterioration.
