FLAIR hyperintensity refers to areas that appear bright on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery MRI sequences. These regions typically represent pathological processes such as edema, gliosis, demyelination, or ischemia. FLAIR sequences suppress cerebrospinal fluid signal while maintaining contrast between normal and abnormal brain tissue. Common causes of FLAIR hyperintensity include chronic small vessel disease, multiple sclerosis plaques, and periventricular white matter changes. The distribution and pattern of these hyperintensities can provide important diagnostic clues.
