Maximum intensity projection (MIP) is a volume rendering technique commonly used in neuroradiology to create angiographic-style images from 3D datasets such as CT angiography or MR angiography. The algorithm projects the maximum pixel intensity encountered along each ray path through the volume, effectively creating a 2D representation that highlights high-intensity structures like contrast-enhanced blood vessels while suppressing background tissues. MIP reconstructions are essential for evaluating vascular anatomy, detecting aneurysms, stenoses, and other vascular abnormalities. Multiple viewing angles and targeted MIP reconstructions of specific vessel territories enhance diagnostic accuracy and surgical planning.
