Full Definition

Time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (TOF MRA) is a non-invasive imaging technique that exploits the flow-related enhancement of moving blood to create angiographic images without contrast agents. Fresh blood flowing into the imaging plane appears bright against stationary tissue that has been saturated by repeated radiofrequency pulses. This technique is particularly valuable for evaluating intracranial vessels, carotid arteries, and detecting vascular pathologies such as aneurysms, stenoses, and arteriovenous malformations. TOF MRA is often preferred when contrast agents are contraindicated or when multiple follow-up studies are needed.
