Full Definition

A ventricular shunt is a medical device surgically implanted to treat hydrocephalus by providing an alternative pathway for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage from the brain's ventricular system. The most common type is the ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt, which diverts CSF from the lateral ventricles to the peritoneal cavity. Other types include ventriculoatrial and ventriculopleural shunts. These devices consist of a ventricular catheter, valve mechanism, and distal catheter. Neuroimaging is essential for monitoring shunt function, detecting complications such as obstruction or malposition, and assessing treatment efficacy through measurement of ventricular size.
