The Brunnstrom stages of motor recovery describe the predictable pattern of motor function return following stroke, developed by occupational therapist Signe Brunnstrom. The six stages progress from Stage I (flaccid paralysis with no voluntary movement) through Stage VI (near-normal movement with minimal spasticity). Intermediate stages involve the emergence of spasticity, synergistic movement patterns, and gradual separation of movement components. This framework helps clinicians understand patient presentation, set appropriate treatment goals, and predict recovery trajectories. While newer motor learning approaches have influenced practice, Brunnstrom stages remain valuable for documentation, communication, and understanding post-stroke motor recovery patterns in rehabilitation settings.
