Full Definition

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) is an evidence-based rehabilitation intervention that promotes recovery of motor function in the impaired upper extremity following stroke or brain injury. The technique involves constraining the unaffected arm (typically with a mitt or sling) while engaging the affected arm in intensive, repetitive task practice for several hours daily over 2-3 weeks. CIMT is based on principles of neuroplasticity and learned non-use theory, aiming to overcome the tendency to favor the unaffected limb and promote cortical reorganization. This intervention has shown significant efficacy in improving arm function and reducing disability in selected patients.
