The ability to maintain, achieve, or restore a state of balance during any posture or activity through coordinated actions of sensorimotor systems.

Full Definition

Postural control refers to the complex process of controlling the body's position in space for the purpose of maintaining stability and orientation. It involves the integration of sensory information from visual, vestibular, and somatosensory systems, along with motor responses to maintain center of gravity within the base of support. Postural control encompasses both static balance (maintaining position while stationary) and dynamic balance (maintaining stability during movement). In neurorehabilitation, impaired postural control is common following stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and various neurological conditions. Assessment and training of postural control is fundamental to preventing falls, improving functional mobility, and enhancing quality of life. Interventions may include balance training, sensory integration techniques, and environmental modifications.
