Abnormal drainage of cerebrospinal fluid from the ear, typically following skull base trauma or surgery.

Full Definition

The pathological leakage of cerebrospinal fluid through the ear, usually resulting from a tear in the dura mater at the skull base that creates an abnormal communication between the intracranial space and the middle ear or external auditory canal. This condition most commonly occurs following temporal bone fractures, acoustic neuroma surgery, or other skull base procedures. CSF otorrhea presents a risk for ascending infection leading to meningitis and requires prompt recognition and treatment. The diagnosis is confirmed through fluid analysis for beta-2 transferrin or glucose content, and treatment may range from conservative management with bed rest to surgical repair of the dural defect.
