Full Definition

A pseudomeningocele is an abnormal collection of cerebrospinal fluid that accumulates in the extradural space due to a dural tear or defect, most commonly occurring as a complication following neurosurgical procedures. Unlike a true meningocele, which contains herniated meninges and brain tissue, a pseudomeningocele consists only of CSF contained within a fibrous capsule formed by surrounding tissues. The condition typically presents as a fluctuant, non-pulsatile mass at the surgical site and may be associated with positional headaches, CSF leak, or signs of increased intracranial pressure. Treatment options range from conservative management with external drainage to surgical repair of the dural defect, depending on the size, symptoms, and associated complications.
