Full Definition

A neurophysiological monitoring technique that measures the electrical activity generated by the nervous system in response to sensory stimulation, typically of peripheral nerves. During neurosurgery, SSEPs are used to monitor the functional integrity of sensory pathways from the peripheral nerves through the spinal cord to the cerebral cortex. The technique involves stimulating nerves (commonly median, ulnar, or posterior tibial) and recording responses at various levels of the nervous system. Changes in SSEP amplitude or latency can indicate neural pathway compromise, allowing surgeons to modify their approach to prevent permanent neurological deficits.
