Cortical lamination refers to the characteristic six-layered organization of the mammalian neocortex, with each layer containing distinct cell types, connectivity patterns, and functional properties. These layers, numbered I through VI from surface to white matter, develop through precise temporal and spatial regulation of neuronal migration during embryogenesis. Disruptions in cortical lamination are associated with various neurodevelopmental disorders including lissencephaly, schizencephaly, and autism spectrum disorders. The laminar organization varies across cortical areas, reflecting functional specialization.
