Acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) is a collection of blood between the dura mater and brain surface, typically caused by tearing of bridging veins. This condition represents a neurosurgical emergency with high morbidity and mortality rates. ASDH often presents with rapid neurological deterioration and requires immediate surgical evacuation. In clinical documentation, editors must distinguish this from chronic subdural hematoma and epidural hematoma based on temporal and anatomical criteria.

Usage note: Always specify 'acute' to distinguish from chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). Do not use interchangeably with epidural hematoma.
