Full Definition

Brain Tissue Oxygen Tension (PbtO2) is measured using invasive probes placed directly into brain tissue, providing real-time assessment of cerebral oxygenation. Normal values range from 20-35 mmHg, with levels below 15 mmHg considered critically low and associated with poor outcomes. This monitoring technique is particularly valuable in traumatic brain injury and other conditions where cerebral oxygen delivery may be compromised. PbtO2 monitoring allows clinicians to detect cerebral hypoxia before it becomes apparent on other monitoring modalities.
