Full Definition

Cerebral compliance represents the relationship between changes in intracranial volume and corresponding changes in intracranial pressure, expressed as ΔV/ΔP. When compliance is high, the brain can accommodate volume changes with minimal pressure elevation. As compliance decreases (poor compliance), small volume increases result in dramatic pressure rises. This concept is fundamental to understanding the Monro-Kellie doctrine and guides therapeutic interventions in neurocritical care. Compliance is influenced by cerebrospinal fluid dynamics, cerebral blood volume, and brain tissue elasticity.
