Full Definition

Cerebral vasogenic edema results from disruption of the blood-brain barrier, allowing plasma proteins and fluid to leak into the brain's extracellular space, primarily affecting white matter. This type of edema commonly occurs around brain tumors, infections, and areas of inflammation. Unlike cytotoxic edema, vasogenic edema typically responds to corticosteroid therapy and osmotic agents. On imaging, it appears as increased signal on T2-weighted MRI with finger-like projections into white matter. Clinical editors must distinguish this from cytotoxic edema in documentation, as treatment approaches and prognoses differ significantly.

Usage note: Always specify 'vasogenic' to distinguish from cytotoxic edema. Describe anatomical distribution and response to treatment.
