ECASS criteria

Pronunciation: EE-kas

Also written as: ECASS — European Cooperative Acute Stroke Study

Standardized radiological criteria for classifying intracerebral hemorrhage types following thrombolytic therapy.

Full Definition

ECASS criteria provide a standardized classification system for hemorrhagic complications following stroke thrombolysis, distinguishing between hemorrhagic infarction (HI-1, HI-2) and parenchymal hematoma (PH-1, PH-2). The classification is based on CT findings and helps predict clinical outcomes. PH-2 (>30% of infarcted area with mass effect) represents the most severe form and is associated with poor functional outcomes.
