Full Definition
A parenchymal monitor is a type of ICP monitoring device inserted directly into the brain parenchyma, typically in the frontal lobe. Unlike ventricular catheters, parenchymal monitors cannot be used for CSF drainage but offer advantages when ventricles are small or shifted. They provide reliable pressure measurements with lower infection risk compared to ventricular devices, though they cannot be recalibrated once placed.
