SAH

Also written as: SAH — Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Subarachnoid hemorrhage; bleeding in the space between brain and skull that requires intensive monitoring.

Full Definition

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) refers to bleeding in the subarachnoid space, the area between the arachnoid membrane and pia mater surrounding the brain. Most commonly caused by ruptured cerebral aneurysms, SAH presents as sudden severe headache and can lead to complications including vasospasm, hydrocephalus, and rebleeding. In neurocritical care, SAH patients require intensive monitoring for neurological deterioration and complications. Documentation must be precise regarding onset, severity grading, and treatment protocols.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from other types of intracranial hemorrhage; specify aneurysmal vs traumatic when known.
