spinal shock

Temporary loss of spinal reflex activity below the level of acute spinal cord injury, distinct from neurogenic shock.

Full Definition

Spinal shock refers to the temporary suppression of spinal reflex activity that occurs immediately following acute spinal cord injury. This phenomenon is characterized by flaccid paralysis, areflexia, and autonomic dysfunction below the level of injury. Spinal shock typically resolves over days to weeks, after which spastic paralysis and hyperreflexia may emerge. It should not be confused with neurogenic shock, which involves hemodynamic instability.
