Targeted Temperature Management

Controlled manipulation of core body temperature to optimize neurological outcomes following brain injury.

Full Definition

Targeted Temperature Management (TTM) involves the deliberate control of core body temperature, typically maintaining normothermia (36-37°C) or mild hypothermia (32-36°C) in patients with acute brain injury. TTM is most commonly used in post-cardiac arrest care and may be considered in other conditions such as traumatic brain injury or stroke. The intervention requires careful monitoring and management of temperature using external cooling devices, IV cooling systems, or surface cooling methods. TTM protocols include controlled rewarming phases and management of complications such as shivering, electrolyte disturbances, and increased infection risk.
