cortical mapping

Technique for identifying functional brain areas during neurosurgical procedures to preserve critical functions.

Full Definition

Cortical mapping is a neurosurgical technique used to identify and localize specific functional areas of the cerebral cortex during brain surgery. The procedure involves electrical stimulation of exposed cortical tissue while the patient performs various tasks or while monitoring physiological responses. Motor cortex is mapped by observing muscle contractions, sensory areas by patient reports of sensations, and language areas by testing speech and comprehension functions. This mapping is crucial during tumor resections or epilepsy surgery near eloquent brain areas, allowing surgeons to maximize lesion removal while preserving essential neurological functions such as movement, sensation, speech, and cognition.

Usage

Usage note: Separate words as noun; hyphenate when used as compound adjective (cortical-mapping technique).

In Context

  • "Cortical mapping identified motor areas within 5mm of the tumor margin." — Awake craniotomy report
