Mathematical technique used to estimate the location and orientation of electrical sources in the brain.

Dipole modeling is a computational method used in EEG and MEG analysis to determine the location, orientation, and strength of electrical current sources in the brain. The technique treats neural activity as electrical dipoles and uses mathematical algorithms to find the best-fitting dipole configuration that could generate the observed scalp potentials or magnetic fields. Single dipole models assume one active source, while multiple dipole models can account for several simultaneous sources. This analysis is crucial in presurgical planning for epilepsy patients and in research studying normal brain function and connectivity.
